If not for Joseph Jesus would not be Legitimate

Luke traces Him through Mary's lineage (she's not mentioned in the geneology itself because wasn't customary to mention women in them, as with the OT geneologies. Matthew broke this trend for theological reasons I can explain later if you'd like.)

Matthew goes through Joseph because he was Jesus' legal father. Thus, he, too, had to be of the line of David in order for Jesus' qualification as Messiah and King to be legitimate.
